Sun and Moon Room

大分県豊後高田市に設立された「不均質な自然と人の美術館」にある、自然と触れ合い身体性を拡張することをテーマにつくられたインタラクティブアートのひとつ。2020年8月に公開、2021年3月にリニューアルされた。

本作は訪れる人が太陽の光と戯れることができる部屋だ。来場者が部屋の中を歩くと天井の小窓が自動で開閉し体が光に包まれるとともに、足元の日だまりが小窓の開閉によって月が満ち欠けするように形を変えていく。来場者の立ち位置はセンサーで検知され、太陽の方角にある小窓だけが開口。また、室内は気象庁の天候情報を解析し、その時々で最適な演出になるよう調整され、晴れの日には部屋の中に靄（もや）がかかり、足元に降り注ぐ光芒を見ることができる。加えて、小窓が開くタイミングでピアノの音が鳴り、部屋の中を歩くことでピアノ曲が演奏される演出も行われる。

本作においてそのテクノロジーは直接提示されず、あくまで太陽の光を切り取って体験者の肌の上に直接届け、自然を感じさせるために用いられる。人工的な光ではなく自然光を体験者に届けることで、視覚のみならず光が持つ温もりをも感じさせ、体験者の感覚と意識を研ぎ澄ませるように設計された。

Sun and Moon Room is one of the interactive artworks at the Art Museum of Nature and Human Non-Homogeneity, constructed in Bungotakada, Oita, Japan, opened to the public in August 2020 and was renovated in March 2021.

Visitors can play with the sun’s rays in this work. A 10 x 5 x 5m room with a 32.5° tilted ceiling and 288 small circular sunlight valves was designed with architects for the sun’s movement in mind. As you walk through the room, the valves on the ceiling automatically open and close. A bright spot of sunlight appears and changes its shape as if the moon waxes and wanes. The LiDAR sensor accurately detects the latitude and longitude of the viewer’s position. Only the valve in the direction towards the sun will be opened. The system triggers a piano sound based on a custom algorithm at the timing of the opening of the valve. Also, it has the aspect of an interactive instrument that a viewer can play by walking around the room. On sunny days, the room is filled with a haze, and the viewers can see a ray of light falling on their feet. The sound is adjusted for suitable expression and harmony at any given time by analysing weather information from the Japan Meteorological Agency.

Depending on the season and time visited, the viewers will meet a different and heterogeneous experience in this room.
