ワイル・アイ・アワルによる《Barzakh》
Wael Al Awar’s Barzakh

ワイル・アル・アワルの《Barzakh》は、2024年にアブダビのPublic Art Abu Dhabi Biennialのために建設された、3つの素材を使うことで環境問題に取り組むパビリオンです。1つ目は、大規模インフラで一般的に使用され、高炭素排出に関連する再生プラスチック。2つ目はアラブ首長国連邦の建築における伝統的な素材であるヤシの繊維。そして3つ目の海水淡水化の副産物である塩水は、湾岸にそのまま流してしまうと海洋生態系に脅威をもたらします。

anno labは、本パビリオンのためにnipekと協力し、24個のLED照明をコントロールして風の流れを可視化する演出を制作しました。アブ・ダビの美しい夕暮れから薄暗くなっていくにつれて、ライトアップされた光の演出によって、湾岸部の心地良い風の流れに応じて光がゆるやかにたなびいていく様子を楽しむことができます。自然との協調はワイル氏と、近年のanno labのアート作品に共通するテーマであり、nipekによる照明コンサルタントを通してanno labにお声掛けがあり、waiwaiとの本コラボレーションが生まれました。

Wael Al Awar’s “Barzakh” (2024) is a pavilion for Public Art Abu Dhabi Biennial that addresses environmental challenges by using three materials: recycled plastic, commonly used in large infrastructure and associated with high carbon emissions; palm fibre, a traditional material in UAE architecture; and brine, a by-product of desalination that poses a threat to marine ecosystems when returned to the Gulf.

For this pavilion, anno lab collaborated with nipek to create a production that visualizes the flow of wind by controlling 24 LED lighting fixtures. As the beautiful dusk of Abu Dhabi fades into twilight, visitors can enjoy the gentle fluttering of the lights as they follow the pleasant flow of the Gulf breeze through the illuminated light effects. Using technology in harmony with nature is a common theme in Mr. Al Awar’s direction and anno lab’s recent artworks, and through nipek’s lighting consultancy, anno lab was approached to collaborate with waiwai.
